Halkidiki (or "Chalkidiki") is the large peninsula in northern Greece and located between the Thermaikos and Strymonikos Gulfs. The peninsula ends in three smaller peninsulas; Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos.

With a coastline of more than 550 km Chalkidiki offers the most beautiful beaches in Greece. 46 of them are awarded with the Blue Flag. But Chalkidiki offers more than sun, sea and beach. Chalkidiki is full of entertainment, festivals and cultural events. There are 20 archaeological sites, historical sites such as Stagira (where Aristotle was born) and the caves of Petralona which were inhabited about 700.000 years ago.

Sithonia


Sithonia
Sithonia, the second peninsula of Chalkidiki, is located between the peninsulas Kassandra and Mount Athos. Sithonia is surrounded by the Toronean Gulf at the east side and the Singitic Gulf at the west. From the airport of Thessaloniki it takes approximately one hour to reach the Sithonia peninsula by car.

Sithonia was named after Sithonas, son of Poseidon (Poseidon is in Greek mythology the god of the sea.)

Mount Athos

Mount Athos

The Holy Mount Athos (Agion Oros) is the only Monk Republic in the world. Athos is inhabited solely by monks who still keep their religious traditional life since the Byzantine period which ended in the year 1453.

It is a place allowed only for men since it was decreed that "no smooth faced person" is permitted to violate its sanctity. It is an exclusive domain only of monks and hermits. The Holy State embarks on its mountainous hills many impressive monasteries, complemented by beautiful natural landscapes.

Mount Athos is a place of continuously devotion to the Orthodox religion with nowadays 20 monasteries and approximatelly 1.700 monks. Access to Mount Athos is from Ouranoupolis (City of Heaven).

Nea Potidea

Nea Potidea
Nea Potidea was founded in 1922 by refugees from eastern Thrace on the site of ancient Potidea or Pallini. It is the village entering to Kassandra impressing the driver while he passes the bridge over the canal where the Thermaikos and Toroneos gulfs are combined together.

The history of Nea Potidea goes back to the early 17th century when it was still a Corinthian colony. The position of this place was very strategic in the ancient years. The today's village was founded in 1922 by the refugees from the East Thrace.

Nea Potidea is a beautiful place for holidays with many resorts and an important harbor. There are many hotels, rooms and apartments for the visitor's accommodation as well as many restaurants, taverns, super markets, and several shops. In the village live around 900 inhabitants and it is only 33 km south-west of Poligiros.

Polychrono

Polychrono
Polychrono is located on the east side of the peninsula Kassandra and lies between the villages Kriopigi and Hanioti.

From Thessaloniki Airport, it takes approximately 1,5 hour to arrive in Polychrono.

History
The history of Polychrono begins when Eretries came in the peninsula of Kassandra and founded the "Neapoli" (New city). In 540 AD. the village was totally destroyed by the Ounous. During the 11th century farmer-breeders were living in this region and they build the village "Polichroo". It was named like this because of the many colored flowers. During the revolution of 1821 AD. it was completely destroyed by Turkish. Some years later a few survivors that had resorted elsewhere build the village again. They named it Polychrono.

Polychrono
Polychrono, which belong to the Municipality of Pallini, is the quieter choice of resort in the Kassandra peninsula. Many village houses are built in traditional style, with wooden balconies, stone walls and red tiled roofs. The village has a beautiful sea front and lots of little roads leading to it with various shops and taverns to visit.

Polychrono combines a traditional village, which gives the resort its name (Very old), with a popular seafront promenade with cafe bars and taverns along its length. The main focus of attention in the evenings is the seafront taverns and fish restaurants.

Polychrono has a number of hotels and accommodation, modern music bars, local super markets, bakery shops, art and craft shops, pharmacies and ATM. The resort can get crowded in July and August.

The beach with crystal clear blue waters of the Toroneos Gulf together with the olive trees and numerous pine forests found throughout the area offers a magnificent
combination. Climb beyond the village to the olive groves above and you're rewarded with gorgeous views of Polychrono and the sea.

Hanioti

Hanioti in Halkidiki is located on the south east side, towards the end of the Kassandra peninsula, between the villages Polychrono and Pefkohori.

Distance from Thessaloniki Airport to Hanioti is approximately 90 kilometers and by car it will take you 1.5 hours to reach the village.

According to a legend Hanioti took it's name from the first inhabitant of Hanioti, a man who originally came from Hania (Crete). The man settled down in the inlands of the old Hanioti area (approximately 2 km more south of the today's village). Inhabitants of neighboring communities called this area "Hanioti's" (area of the man that came from Hania).

Hanioti is one of the most popular and prettiest places of Halkidiki, ideal for couples and families. A lot of modern and luxurious holiday resorts are available (as well as many rooms to let houses and other sorts of accommodation) while plenty of souvenir and gift shops give you the chance to buy all your holiday needs. ATM and medical aid are available in Hanioti as well.

Nightlife in Hanioti centers around the main square and it's side streets. The main square consists of cafes, bars & restaurants that come alive in the evening when the sun goes down.

There are many taverns restaurants to choose from and a wide selection of variety. Local street merchants come out at night, some offering portraits, others jewellery, tattoos, fruit, nuts and lots more. Most shops and bars stay open till late at night.

Some hotels offer a good variety of shows to keep everyone entertained at night as well.

The beach at Hanioti (Blue flag) is very long with fine white sand and crystal clear blue sea water. Watersports are available on some spots on the beach.

Mola Kaliva

Mola Kaliva

Mola Kaliva is a small peaceful settlement located in the south west of Kassandra and it belongs to the community of Kassandrino.

Distance from Mola Kaliva to Fourka is 2 km and distance to the airport of Thessaloniki is approximately 100 km.

Nearby known villages are Fourka, Nea Skioni, Possidi, Hanioti and Polychrono. You will find an ATM in Fourka.

On your way to the south you can reach the villages of Skioni and Ag.Paraskevi with it's thermal springs. You can either follow the scenic route and do the loop of the Kassandra peninsula or take a shortcut just outside Nea Skioni, cross the hills and reach Hanioti, one of the biggest villages on the east part of the peninsula.

It is said that the name 'Mola Kaliva' originates from a guardian appointed to this area by monks. The guard was named Molas, and he stayed in a small cabin (kaliva = cabin). The locals used to say 'at the cabin of Molas,' and that's how the name occurred.

Mola Kaliva has a beautiful natural landscape and is well known as a quiet place in Halkidiki, ideal for visitors looking for a peaceful stay. There are just two taverns, two local supermarkets, a beach bar and a fast food restaurant.

The settlement is also know as a posh place in Halkidiki, due to some Greek celebrities who live there. Entertainment can be found in the nearby villages on this part of Kassandra. It will take approximately 15-20 minutes to drive there.

Mola Kaliva is located right at the sea and has a beautiful large white sandy beach.
Unforgettable is the intense combination of crystal clear sea water and natural beauty of the area.

Nikiti

Nikiti

Nikiti (or Nikitas) is one of the oldest villages of Halkidiki.

It is located in the north of the Sithonia peninsula, 39 km east from Nea Moudania, approximately 110 km south east from Thessaloniki and in between the villages Metamorfosi and Neos Marmaras (23km).

Nikiti has approximately 2833 inhabitants. The village Nikiti consists of two parts, the old and the new village. They are split up by the main road Halkidiki - Sithonia.

The old Nikiti, the original village, extends from the main road land inwards at the hill side. Distance to the sea is approximately 2 km. The 'new' Nikiti, the newer village part, extends from the main road up to the sea.

During the classical years the most significant city was Galipsos, which was located south of Nikiti. In 432 BC, the city broke with with the Athenian alliance and many of its inhabitants moved to the city of Olynthos. In 1300 the largest part of Nikiti belonged to various monasteries of Agion Oros (Xenophontos, Lavras, Xeropotamou). In the 14th century the present Nikiti is mentioned for the first time as Neakitou, a small settlement of the cultivators of the monastery of Xenophontos. With the passing of time the population grew and in the 15th century the small settlement became an independent village.

In 1821 the Turks destroyed Nikiti during the war of independence but the inhabitants returned between 1822 and 1827 and rebuild it again.

Main occupation for inhabitants of Nikiti is tourism and farming (agriculture and in particular beekeeping for the production of the famous honey).

Nikiti, located at the Toronean Gulf, has a 30 km coastline with beautiful beaches and crystal clear sea water. Some of the beaches are awarded with the Blue Flag for safety & services, water quality and environmental information.

Every friday morning, till 13:00, there is a traditional market in Nikiti where you can buy the famous honey and other local products.

In Nikiti there is a wide selection of variety in accommodation; from cheap rooms to let houses till luxurious resorts. You will find two big supermarkets on the main road and ATM machines, pharmacies, restaurants, taverns, bars, cafes along with other shops selling local products around the village.

The famous "Crossing of Toroneos Gulf", a marathon swim of 26 km from the Kassandra peninsula to Nikiti, is organized yearly by "Sithon", the Cultural Youth
Association of Nikiti together with the Municipality of Nikiti. This event attracts a lot of national and international athletes.

Porto Koufo

Porto Koufo

Porto Koufo, a tiny fishing settlement of Sikia, is located on the south-west point of the Sithonia peninsula as you can see on the Halkidiki map.

Coming from Neos Marmaras and going to Sikia / Sarti, you will find Porto Koufo on the right side on your way.

History of Porto Koufo
"Kofos Limin" (Deaf harbor) was mentioned by Thucydides, the ancient Greek historian. Ancient inhabitants gave it this name, because sea sounds could not be heard inside the bay.

Porto Koufo has the largest natural harbor in Greece and a rich history. The harbor was used as a base by Turkish pirates and also during World War II by Germans for U-boats (because of its geographical location and direct access to the Aegean Sea). German army fortified the area and many of those fortifications are still visible.

About Porto Koufo
Porto Koufo has approximately 100 inhabitants, distance to Thessaloniki is 145 km and to Thessaloniki Airport 135 km. Porto Koufo consists only of some houses, buildings and some tourist facilities.

Nature in the surroundings of Porto Koufo seems untainted and looks very wild and rocky. It is one of the most beautiful areas in Chalkidiki.

Aside from the tiny village and small beach of Porto Koufo you will find a very large but calm sandy beach at Tristinika, some minutes from Porto Koufo. If you are planning to visit this beach, follow the main road from Porto Koufo in the direction of Neos Marmaras. Soon you will see a sign on your left. Follow this sign and via some
narrow curved paths you will arrive at this beautiful beach. In September, Porto Koufo hosts the festival; "Fishing of the Tuna".

Sarti

Sarti in Halkidiki is among the most wanted travel destinations on the Sithonia peninsula.

Sarti, a small fishermen and farming village which belongs to the municipality of Toroni, is located on the east side of Sithonia, between Vourvourou and Sikia.

History of Sarti
In the Byzantine era the land was called Sartis and it belonged to the Holy Monastery of Xiropotamos of Mount Athos. Greek refugees who came from Afisia (Minor Asia) inhabited the settlement in 1922. Some of the picturesque refugee houses are still preserved in the old village and are visible until today.

About Sarti
Nowadays the village is a holiday settlement and it has approximately 900 inhabitants. But during the summer months Sarti attracts thousands of tourists.

When arriving at Sarti you will have a stunning look on the village. You can see the enormous beach with a crystal blue sea in front of Sarti and impressive green mountains surrounding the village.

When entering the village you will feel immediately that you've entered a small cosmopolitan tourist resort; Small streets full of rented rooms, hotels and apartment buildings, numerous souvenir and tourist shops, different traditional food shops, supermarkets, taverns, bars, restaurants and a lot of tourists.

At the promenade at the seaside you will find many taverns and restaurants, giving you a magnificent view at the sea, the Mount Athos peninsula and on a clear day you can see some of the famous monasteries across the bay.

Camping's in Sarti
Apart from the hotels and numerous of rooms to let and apartment houses, there are also some known camping grounds in the surroundings of Sarti, equipped with all the necessary facilities and with beautiful beaches that are certainly worth a visit.

Sarti Curiosities
If you have a chance visit the dependency of the Monastery of Xiropotamos in Sarti: At least 70 families who came from Minor Asia in 1922 were given a refuge in the dependency. Some of them were staying there for more than two years.

If your visit concurs with the "Dekapentavgousto" (means "August 15th") on 15th of August, you will have the opportunity to enjoy yourself at the traditional fair honoring Virgin Mary (Panagia).

Nightlife
Nightlife in Sarti is well developed. In the village there are enough clubs and bars. Close to the village you will find the most famous beach bars of Sithonia which give
you a magnificent view on the Holy Mountain at sunrise. Sarti in Sithonia is definitely the place to be!

Vourvourou

Vourvourou, a small settlement of Agios Nikolaos, is located on the east side of the Sithonia peninsula, between the villages Ormos Panagia and Sarti, as you can see on the map of Halkidiki. The distance to Agios Nikolaos is approximately 10 km, Thessaloniki 120 km and Thessaloniki Airport 110 km.

About the area of Vourvourou
This brilliant area of Chalkidiki has some beautiful bays with the for Vourvourou characteristic small rocky islands, caves, a clean sea, sandy beaches, forested areas and many summer homes.

While sunbathing, the beach and sea are ideal for young children, since you can walk many meters into the sea, without it getting a lot deeper. In the area of Vourvourou it's possible to rent water bikes, windsurf boards, sailing and motorboats and the reef of Vourvourou seems to be very impressive for divers as well, since the coral reef, at a depth of approximately 18 to 22 meter, is unique for Greek context.

Excursion
Vourvourou is close to Ormos Panagia (approximately 5 km), where a cruise boat departs for the daily cruise to Mount Athos. During this cruise you will see the monasteries located at the western part of the Athos peninsula. Also the cruise boat will stop for a while in Ouranoupolis, where you can visit the idyllic center of the village which is full of taverns and tourist shops.
